Timothy Muganzi Magambo, 18 — Drowned Swimming Off Shelter Island, NY
Timothy Muganzi Magambo, 18, drowned on May 16, 2026 while swimming with six friends across the channel between Wades Beach and Shell Beach on Shelter Island, New York. He became separated from the group partway across; when they could not find him, they raised the alarm and located him floating face-down several hundred yards from where he was last seen. Bystanders brought him to shore and performed emergency aid before he was taken to South Shore University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. He was a 2025 graduate of Pelham Memorial High School and had been attending SUNY Albany. His death drew wide coverage in Uganda, where his father, Maj. Tom Magambo, heads the Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID).
